Here is an O.E.M wise glimpse of how each car and bike manufacturer in the Indian market fared in terms of sales post the COVID-19 induced lockdown and the festive season in India, for the month of November 2020.
Starting with the volume leader, Maruti Suzuki India Limited registered total sales of 153,223 units in November 2020. This includes domestic sales of 138,956 units and 5,263 units for other OEMs. In November 2020, the brand also exported 9,004 units. Maruti Suzuki sold 22,339 units in the mini sub-segment which includes the popular Alto & the S-Presso of which the latter saw itself in hot waters after Global NCAP published its crash safety report.
Tata Motors recorded sales of 21,641 units in the passenger vehicle segment and 26,218 units of total domestic sales in the commercial vehicle segment. The brand also exported 1,764 units of commercial vehicles taking the total domestic & international market stood at 49,653 units in November 2020. Total Domestic sales stood at 47,859 units.
Hyundai Motor India Ltd registered a cumulative sales of 59,200 units out of which 48,800 were sold in the domestic market and 10,400 units as exports. When compared to the same month in 2019, Hyundai sold 60,500 units of cumulative sales, where 44,600 were in the domestic market and 15,900 units in exports.
Kia Motors India announced that the brand sold 21,022 units in November 2020, out of which the Kia Sonet in India registered sales of 11,417 units leading the compact SUV segment in the Indian market. Kia has reported a growth of 50% over the same period last year.
Honda Cars India Ltd (HCIL) recorded sales of 9,990 units in the domestic market in the month of November 2020, against 6,459 units sales posted in the same month last year, registering a growth of 55% despite COVID-19 pandemic, but the brand was also able to leverage the festive demand. The Japanese carmaker also exported 31 units in November 2020.
MG Motor India, one of the youngest brand’s in the country, registered sales of 4,163 units in November 2020 and also claims to overtake Ford India in the sales rankings in November. The brand also showed a growth of 28.5% against the same period last year. The MG Hector recorded sales of 3,426 units in November 2020. The MG ZS EV pure electric vehicle recorded sales of 110 units in November 2020. Also, India’s first Autonomous Level 1 SUV, the MG Gloster registered sales of 627 units in November.
Toyota Kirloskar Motors posted sales of 8508 units in the month of November 2020 as against 8312 units in the in November 2019 in the domestic market, showing a growth of 2.4%. During the festive season, Toyota Kirloskar Motors revealed that the company observed a 10-13% increase in customer orders & 12% increase in retail sales (Dealer to Consumer) when compared to the sales in the last year festive season.
Royal Enfield registered sales of 63,782 motorcycles in the month of November as compared to the sales of 60,411 motorcycles in the same month last year. The brand sold 59,084 units in the domestic market and 4,698 units were exported. The brand showed a total growth of 6% with 1% growth in the domestic market and 122% growth in the exports as compared to the same period in the last year.
Honda Motorcycles & Scooters India Limited recorded sales of 433,206 units in the month of November 2020 with 412,641 units in the domestic market which is an overall growth of 9% and 11% growth in the domestic market. The brand exported 20,565 units. Earlier the brand also announced that the Honda H’Ness CB350 registered sales of 1,000 units in just 20 days.
Hero MotoCorp announced that the brand sold 591,091 units of motorcycles and scooters in November 2020. In November 2020, Hero MotoCorp sold 541,437 units of motorcycles and 49,654 units of scooters with a total of 575,957 units sold in the domestic market and 15,134 units in exports. During the 32-day festive season (Navratri to Bhau Duj) Hero MotoCorp sold more than 14 lakh units.
Bajaj Auto sold 1,88,196 units in the domestic two-wheeler segment in November 2020, 1,96,797 units of exports in the two-wheeler segment, taking the total to 3,84,993 units of sales in November 2020. In the commercial vehicle segment, Bajaj Auto recorded sales of 10,737 units in the domestic market and 26,510 units of exports, bringing the total to 4,22,240 units.
TVS Motor Company sold 322,709 units in November 2020 which is 21% more than November 2019 when the brand had sold 266,582 units. In the two-wheeler segment, 311,519 units were sold in November 2020 with 247,789 units in the domestic market 63,730 units of motorcycles in exports.
Suzuki Motorcycle India Pvt. Ltd sold 64,224 unit in the month of November 2020. Out of which 57,429 units were sold in the domestic market and 6,795 units were exported. The brand also recently announced the launch of the new BS6 compliant V-Strom 650XT ABS strengthening its Big Bike portfolio.
Yamaha Motor India registered total sales of 53,208 units in the month of November 2020 as compared to the 39,406 units in November 2019 which show a growth of 35%. The company has been reporting growth for the 5th consecutive month. The brand also expects the demand to grow in December as well as the next year due to the uptake in the personal mobility segment in the post COVID era.
