Nissan’s new cool paint tech reduces car temperature by 10 degrees

Nissan has partnered with Radi-Cool to develop a new car body paint which could lower the ambient temperature of the car and reduce the energy usage of the air conditioning system. Currently, the paint technology is on trial which commenced in November 2023. While trails began just last year, Nissan has been working on the cool paint since 2021.

Nissan Trialing “Cool Paint” in Japan

According to Nissan, the feasibility trial is being conducted at the Tokyo International Air Terminal at Haneda. The brand has collaborated with the Japan Airport Terminal Co, Ltd., Radi-Cool Japan and All Nippon Airways (ANA) airport services to test the cool paint tech.

Nissan reveals that the Haneda airport has the perfect environment to expose the paint to a high temperature environment and conduct real-world evaluation. Thanks to the large open Tarmac the paints performance can be tested by parking two cars side-by-side under the sun. Nissan revealed that the Cool Paint has shown a result of 21.6-degree Freduction in exterior surface temperatures compared to standard paints. Also, up to 9-degree F cooler interior temperatures have been observed.

How Cool is the Cool Paint?

The cooling performance of the paint is particularly noticeable when the cars were parked under the sun for longer periods. And because the cabin remains around 10-degrees cooler than car with traditional automotive paint, less air-conditioning performance is required to bring the temperature down when in use. This helps reduce the load on the engine or on the draw of power on the battery in electric vehicles, improving the efficiency, in addition to keeping the occupant cool.

How Does Cool Paint Work?

The Nissan cool paint features an embedded metamaterial with two microstructure particles that react to light. One particle reflects the near-infrared rays of the sun that cause the resin to heat by vibrating them on a molecular level and the other particle creates electromagnetic waves that redirect the Sun’s energy from the vehicle to the atmosphere.
