Nissan has officially teased the electric version of its iconic R32 GT-R. The R32 GT-R EV replaces the legendary RB26DETT gas engine with an all-electric powertrain.
The RB26DETT engine, introduced in 1989, is a 2.6-liter twin-turbocharged inline-six engine. It produced 276 horsepower and 260 lb-ft of torque, making it a favorite among car enthusiasts. The engine’s reliability and performance have cemented its place in automotive history.
Nissan’s volunteer engineers have been working on converting the R32 GT-R into an electric vehicle since March 2023. The project aims to preserve the original car’s charm while introducing modern electrification. The R32 GT-R EV features two electric motors, one at the rear and another under the hood, ensuring it retains its all-wheel-drive setup.
Nissan has not revealed any specification of the EV powertrain. However, there are speculations that the powertrain is borrowed from the Ariya Nismo. The Ariya features two electric motors producing 430 horsepower in total.
The teaser images reveal that the electric R32 GT-R looks almost identical to the original, with minor exterior changes like the removal of fog lights and the addition of orange brake calipers. The battery pack replaces the rear seats, and a fresh pair of Skyline-branded sport seats are inside.
Nissan has hinted that the next-generation GT-R, likely the R36, will be fully electric. The company is also working on solid-state battery technology, which promises better energy density and quicker charging. However, this technology is not expected to be ready until 2028.
The R32 GT-R EV will make its public debut at the Tokyo Auto Salon 2025, running from January 10-12 at Makuhari Messe. This event will also feature the outgoing R35 GT-R Nismo Special Edition and other Nissan vehicles showcasing advanced technology and customization.
Nissan’s electric transformation of the R32 GT-R is a nod to the future while honoring the past. The project showcases what’s possible with EV conversions and gives enthusiasts a glimpse of what’s to come. The R32 GT-R EV is a testament to Nissan’s commitment to innovation and sustainability.
