Nissan Qashqai bags 2.5 stars in Green NCAP test. What does it mean?

All of us know what NCAP tests mean, but there is also a different kind of test called Green NCAP. Nissan is evaluating the Qashqai SUV for the Indian market, and now the same has been tested independently by the Green NCAP.

What is Green NCAP?

Green NCAP is a new initiative to make consumers aware of their car’s energy consumption and greenhouse emissions. Just like crash tests, which inform consumers about the safety of their vehicles, Green NCAP tests the cars’ negative impact on the environment. They do this by conducting a series of laboratory and on-road testing of the vehicles. Cars that offer better performance get more publicity and consumer awareness ensures higher sales for the model.

Nissan Qashqai Clean Air Tests

The first set of results tests the levels of NMHC, NOX, NH3, CO and PN levels. They are conducted both in the lab and on the road. The car scores above average in these tests and shows good control of particulate matter and standard emissions. That said, the NH3 levels (ammonia) are on the higher side (this is not a legal requirement) and might present a challenge to the carmaker to reduce its levels. The on-road tests are inline with the lab results as well. The Nissan Qashqai scores a Clean Air Index of 7.

Nissan Qashqai Energy Efficiency Tests

This tests the car’s fuel economy. As per the WLTP cycle, the car offers 6.5L/100 km. However, on the highway test, the car offered 8.7L/100 km. This is on the expected lines for a petrol SUV.

Nissan Qashqai Greenhouse Gases Tests

The Greenhouse Gases tests the CO2, N2O and CH4 levels. The lab tests shows tail pipe emissions of 38g CO2 equivalent. However 32g CO2 equivalent is added to it due to a Well-to-Wheel method. This means the source of the fuel is accounted as well. On the Highway the car scores a very high 247g CO2 equivalent, resulting in a Zero score. That said, the N2O and CH4 levels are very low, demonstrating a good exhaust system.
