Next-generation KTM 1290 Super Adventure spied with radar-based cruise control

KTM is testing the next-generation 1290 Super Adventure the spy shots of which have been circulating the internet. The spied pictures of new 1290 Super Adventure reveal that the bike will not only be getting updates in terms of styling but also get a majority of electronic upgrades and will come with features such as a forward-looking radar.

The KTM 1290 Super Adventure was spotted with a radar unit mounted in between the larger LED headlight unit which is likely to be powered by Bosch and will allow possibilities such as adaptive cruise control which allows the bike to automatically accelerate and decelerate with the vehicle in front of it, when the cruise control is active. The radar-guided cruise control is likely to be controlled via the large full-colour TFT instruments screen and also gives possibilities of active safety features such as Forward Collision Warning if the brand rolls out such a feature.

In terms of design, the KTM 1290 Super Adventure features an upright front fascia with an imposing headlamp unit, tall touring style windscreen, large wraparound fenders that protect the front forks, chiselled large fuel tank in a split saddle style inspired from the brand’s Dakar rally bikes, that not only help carry more fuel but enable a lower centre of gravity and help the rider maintain balance while riding off-road. The KTM 1290 Super Adventure also features large ergonomic seats, an upright handlebar for easy rider’s triangle, knuckle guards and the new bike comes with an enormous side slung exhaust to conform to Euro5 emission standards.

The changes are not limited to its style and electronics but the spy shots reveal that the ADV gets a significantly larger swingarm for more rigidity, an aluminium bolt-on subframe to offset the weight that is likely to see an increase owing to the added electronic equipment and the larger after-treatment system and the bike has been seen testing with 21-inch front and 18-inch rear wheels with conventional suspension on the R model and 19-inch front and 17-inch wheels with electronically controlled suspension on the S model.

The KTM Super Adventure is expected to share its engine with the 1290 Super Duke R but it is likely to be tuned for highway riding. The new Euro5 norm are likely to sap power away from the engine but the brand is expected to tune it to extract upwards of 160 Hp.

The next-generation KTM Super Adventure will also be more expensive than the predecessor given the cutting-edge technology it features and is likely to arrive at showrooms in 2022.
