Mahindra might be gearing up to launch the next generation XUV500 which is expected to be introduced in 2021. According to spy shots and media reports, the new SUV is being tested by the brand and is likely to still be in the developmental phase. Earlier rumours suggested that the car will be launched in the mid of 2020 but if the new reports are to be believed the launch could be pushed to the next year, which leads us to believe that the current-generation XUV500 will continue to be sold in the market but will obviously get a BS6 compliant powertrain.
On its exteriors, the next-generation XUV500 is likely to get its design inspiration from the Mahindra Funster Concept showcased at the 15th edition of the Auto Expo 2020 held in Delhi. The SUV is expected to feature new LED daytime running lights similar to the ones on the XUV300, smaller and sleeker headlight units with LED technology offered on the higher-end trims, signature Mahindra grille with a refreshed look, redesigned front and rear bumpers etc. The profile of the car is likely to have the same XUV500 silhouette with redesigned door panels and new character lines. It is also being speculated that the SUV is likely to feature flush-mounted door handles which are offered on more premium SUVs. The door handles may not be of the motorised type but a lever-type to keep costs viable.
On the inside, the next-generation Mahindra XUV500 is likely to come in the same three-row layout and feature a large fully-digital colour driver’s display and an infotainment system sitting on the same plane inspired from the Mahindra Funster Concept. It is also likely to feature automatic climate control, control mounted steering wheel along with standard interior tech as seen on the current-gen XUV500.
The engine powering the Mahindra XUV500 is likely to be a new 2.2-litre diesel which will obviously be BS6 emissions compliant and will have DPF (Diesel Particulate Filter) as well as SCR (Selective Catalytic Reduction) after-treatment systems to reach compliance. The engine is expected to receive a 6-speed manual as well as an optional 6-speed torque converter type automatic gearbox. This engine is likely to be introduced on the current-gen car before the new norms roll-in.
Alternatively, the brand is also likely to introduce a BS6 compliant 2.0-litre turbocharged direct-injection petrol unit on the current-gen XUV500 which will be then carried forward to the next-gen SUV. The 2.0-litre TGDi Stallion series engine develops 190 hp of power and 380 Nm of torque and was showcased at the Auto Expo 2020.
