New Volkswagen Tiguan SUV revealed

Written by Kanad Kalasur

Volkswagen has unveiled the new Tiguan SUV. This updated Tiguan is based on the new MQB-Evo platform. This model will share many bits, including the underpinnings with the global Passat sedan. Both the Tiguan and the Passat were developed concurrently.

Design and dimensions of the VW Tiguan

In terms of dimensions, the new Tiguan measures 4,539 mm long, 1,842 mm wide and is 1,639 mm tall. Compared to the outgoing model, the new model is 30 mm longer and 4 mm taller. The wheelbase of both the current and the old Tiguan has remained the same at 2,689 mm.

While the exterior features more of an evolution rather than an all-new update, the main update has been done to the insides. The new Tiguan gets a minimal cabin with premium materials, new technology and bigger space as well.

What’s new on the inside of the VW Tiguan?

According to the German carmaker, the headroom is improved by 8mm in the front and by 10mm in the rear while the boot space in the non-plug-in hybrid models has witnessed an increase of 37 litres to 652 litres.

This is the third-gen model. The main changes include the dashboard, new infotainment display and the digital instrument cluster. The driver gets a multifunction steering wheel with normal buttons instead of the capacitive buttons of the outgoing model.

The new dashboard features updated controls, new illuminated elements, updated AC vents and sports a larger 12.9-inch touchscreen infotainment in the middle.

Further, the driver benefits from a 10.3-inch digital display as well. Owners can configure their Tiguans with the optional 15-inch infotainment screen as well.

The display uses the updated MIB4 menu system. Thus, the AC controls are managed on the infotainment screen as well, towards the lower part. Furthermore, the centre console now houses a rotary controller that changes the drive modes, volume as well as ambient light functions amongst others.

Tiguans equipped with DSG transmissions will get their drive mode selector as a stalk on the steering column.

New Volkswagen Tiguan : Powertrain

The new Tiguan now gets a 1.5-litre petrol mild hybrid engine. This is offered in FWD layout with either 131 HP or 150 HP configurations. The 2.0-litre TSI petrol continues to be offered with 204 HP in FWD and 265 HP in AWD layouts. This engine has been updated as compared to the current guise.

Meanwhile, the 2.0-litre TDI is offered in 150 HP FWD or 193 HP AWD variants.

VW is also offering the plug-in variants of the Tiguan this time around. The eTSI variants now get the 1.5-litre unit as compared to the outgoing 1.4-litre engine. These can be ordered in 204 HP or 272 HP in front wheel drive configuration. A 19.7 kWh battery is good for an all-electric range of 100 km. The cars also get a 50 kW DC fast charging option.

Transmission options include a seven-speed DSG on the petrol and diesel options while the plug-in hybrids come with a six-speed DSG.
