New Piaggio scooters to rival Honda Activa and TVS Jupiter?

In a recent statement, the Chairman and CEO of Piaggio, Michele Colaninno, confirmed that Piaggio is working on the range of new premium scooters that are likely to be offered at an affordable/competitive price.

As per the statement, the company is now interested in stepping in the ‘value’ segment that has better sales as opposed to the bigger capacity scooter range which the brand sells currently.

Speaking of the current product lineup of Piaggio, its scooters include brands like Vespa and Aprilia. The most affordable offerings are the Aprilia Storm 125 and Vespa 125, which are available from Rs 1.34 lakh and Rs 1.54 lakh, respectively.

Assessing the statement, we assume that Piaggio will most likely introduce a new brand name. Under this brand tag, the company will introduce lower-spec and more affordable models, which will then compete with popular scooters like the Honda Activa and the TVS Jupiter.

Meanwhile, we continue seeing unnamed Piaggio test scooters around Pune, where the brand is located. Out of these multiple test mules, which have been spotted over time, few will make it to production soon.

However, there are no further details known about which scooters are being planned for and what engine or platform will be used. But, what we can anticipate is that Piaggio will also export these scooters internationally.

Our verdict

The presence of Piaggio in India has remained unnoticed for years now. The primary reason behind this is the high price tag and lifestyle scooter category perception among buyers. With the upcoming affordable and premium scooter range, Piaggio will try to attempt a hit on the mass scooter segment.
