Volkswagen recently celebrated 10 years of the Polo hatchback in India. The Polo although not a segment leader in India, Volkswagen so far has managed to sell more than 2.5 lakh units in all these years. The Polo slots in the premium hatchback space and rivals the likes of Maruti Suzuki Baleno, Hyundai Elite i20, Toyota Glanza, Honda Jazz and the upcoming Tata Altroz. Now, reports are doing the rounds that Volkswagen might finally be planning to launch the new Polo in India, which went ahead with the new generation model worldwide almost 2 years back.
Volkswagen India could showcase the new Polo in concept guise at the 2020 Auto Expo. The new Polo hatchback is going to be based on the MQB platform which has been tweaked to meet the cost in our market, and the platform is dubbed as MQB A0 IN. Reports suggest that the Polo will be kept as a sub-4 metre product to benefit from lower taxation, which will result in competitive pricing. The 6th generation Polo went on sale in international markets in 2017, but India for the past 10 years has just received minor tweaks on the exterior, and multiple engine and gearbox combinations.
The new Polo abroad measures 4,053mm in length which will be shortened here in India.
The 2020 Volkswagen Polo when launched will have powerful engines as per segment standards, both in petrol and diesel engine avatars with automatic DSG gearboxes on offer. Other features could include virtual cockpit instrument cluster, touchscreen infotainment with Apple Car Play and Android Auto, climate control, rear AC vents, snazzy alloy wheels, LED headlamp and tail lamps and more…
With more technology, better chassis and more features, the new generation Polo will most definitely ask for more money than the model currently on sale. Volkswagen in India has allowed Skoda to head the way forward in terms of product planning and positioning. Skoda however has no hatchback plans which would be a badge engineered sibling to the new Polo.
