BMW’s M Division will soon launch the new M4 CSL. The upcoming M4 CSL will be the M Division’s third CSL model. To celebrate the new CSL, BMW M Division has been sharing teaser photos of the car on Instagram. Since the E46 M3 CSL, BMW M has not released another CSL. Hence, it makes the upcoming G82 M4 CSL an exciting rarity in the BMW lineup.
BMW used the CSL moniker for the first time in 1972 on the 3.0 CSL. The car was a homologation special so that it could race in European Touring Cars. The 3.0 CSL homologation special was limited to just 500 units. In addition to this, the car represented the best in racing technology for a BMW road car.
The next car to have it was the 2003 BMW E46 M3 CSL. The E46 M3 CSL was a brilliant performer. However, a lot of controversies surrounded the car. The biggest one was the use of a single-clutch automated manual SMG transmission instead of a 6-speed manual which was available for the base E46 M3. Apart from this, BMW increased the power of the S54 straight-six engine to 355 HP and 370 Nm. Additionally, the company removed over 100 kg weight compared to the standard E46 M3.
We won’t have to wait long for the unveiling of the G82 M4 CSL. The company has already started a countdown for its unveil by releasing teaser images. According to reports, BMW will use the same formula as the older CSL cars. This means more power and less weight. Reports say BMW will increase the power of the S58 engine to 550 HP. The current M4 Competition makes 503 HP. Due to the increased power, it is unlikely that BMW will offer a manual gearbox.
The spy shots so far revealed that the G82 M4 CSL will feature revised aerodynamics. Additionally, it will get a unique ducktail spoiler like the previous CSL models. According to reports, BMW might have found a way to remove 100 kg of weight from the car. One of the CSL’s teaser images also shows a carbon fibre bucket seat. Safe to assume that the rear seats will no longer be there and will use lighter materials throughout.
