Bajaj Auto could be in the process of developing a new electric scooter platform which could expand the Chetak range in the near future. According to reports, the company is developing a new Chetak platform which is likely to available in the next financial year. In addition to this, Bajaj Auto is also likely to offer new affordable as well as premium electric scooters before the end of this financial year.
Furthermore, the company also believes that electric scooters hold far more potential than the electric motorcycles. This leads us to believe that the brand is likely to stick to making electric scooters rather than venturing into the electric motorcycle segment, which its rival Ola Electric plans to do in the near future. Bajaj also claims that the electric motorcycle market is not catching up in India and thus motorcycle EV companies are not able to compete with EV scooters.
Currently, Bajaj retails the Chetak electric scooter in four variants – Chetak 2901, Urbane, Premium and the newly launched 3201 SE. The Chetak range starts from INR 96,000 ex-showroom in Bangalore and the top spec model gets a range of around 126 km on a single charge and top speed of 73 kmph. Bajaj also reveals that the popular electric scooter has found more than 200,000 homes with presence in more than 400 cities across the country. The Chetak fleet has also racked more than 2.28 Billion kms and reduced carbon emissions by 17.29 million kgs.
In addition to the new electric 2-wheeler platform Bajaj is also planning to introduce another CNG-powered models which is likely to be more affordable than the recently launched Freedom 125. This also leads us to believe that the company is likely to focus on reducing the carbon footprint by introducing more CNG-powered bikes in the near future.
