BMW’s M3 is now available only in the Competition avatar which brings with it the most powerful version of the six-cylinder in-line engine with M TwinPower Turbo technology and M xDrive AWD system. Along with the, for 2024 the BMW M3 has also received a design refresh as well as tech updates. The car now comes with new ECU mapping producing more power, making it sprint faster, as well as a large 14.9-inch curved infotainment system.
Powering the new BMW M3 is a 3.0-litre high-revving straight-six enginewith M TwinPower Turbo technology. BMW has adapted technology from race-car engine construction offering performance experience on both road and track. The newly updated engine features a closed-deck construction featuring a lightweight forged crankshaft and sleeve free crankcase, have unlocked all of its potential.
The cylinder bores also have a wire-arc sprayed iron coating and the cylinder head features a 3D-printed core. The engine also features optimised routing of the coolant ducts thanks to 3D printing technology which is another special M-specific feature and could not have been achieved from conventional metal casting methods. The oil circuit is also designed to handle pressures of track driving and a map-controlled oil pump ensures dependable oil supply even under extreme longitudinal and lateral acceleration, reveals BMW.
In addition to this, the M TwinPower Turbo technology which consists of two mono-scroll turbochargers. Each supply compressed air to three-cylinders and an indirect intercooler supplied by a low-temperature circuit enhances the turbocharger’s output.
Additionally, the engine also features a High Precision Injection system that works at maximum pressure of 350 bar. Thanks to the high pressure system fine atomisation of fuel is ensured. This fine atomisation results in a faster engine response. The engine also gets a VALVETRONIC variable valve timing system and Double-VANOS fully variable camshaft timing technology.
Thanks to the M TwinPower Turbo technology, High Precision Injection system, Map controlled oil pump, special cylinder bores and head as well as a newly configured digital engine control unit (DME), the engine on the M3 Competition now pumps out 20 Hp more than before. This takes the power output figure to 530 Hp and the peak torque to 650 Nm. This enables the BMW M3 Competition sedan to sprint from 0-100 kmph in just 3.5 seconds and also achieve an electronically limited top speed of 250 kmph. Thanks to the optional M Driver’s Package this top speed figure can be unlocked to 290 kmph.
The new BMW M3 will be going into series production in July. The brand will be manufacturing the car at the BMW Group Plant Munich and will be launched worldwide with a production phase-in in July 2024.
