Tata is planning to launch a new Nexon EV in the Indian market. The brand is planning to upgrade the battery pack of the Tata Nexon EV to help the electric car compete with higher-specification models such as the MG ZS EV and the Hyundai Kona EV. However, compared to other offerings in the electric vehicle segment, the Tata Nexon EV still commands around 60% of the market share. This is thanks to the affordability of the vehicle, and as the segment is still in the nascent stage, adopters are using electric vehicles as their second or even third cars, used as runabouts in the city.
Currently, the Tata Nexon comes with a 30.2 kWh battery pack which provides a range of around 321 km on a single charge, according to the ARAI. However, the real-world range is said to be about 180-220 km on a single charge. Reports suggest that Tata Motors will employ a new 40 kWh battery pack on the upgraded Nexon EV. The larger battery pack will return a real-world range of around 300-320 km on a single charge.
The extended range on the electric vehicle will also allow adopters to make intercity travel and outstation trips. The electric charging infrastructure is also under development in the Indian market, which will reduce the range anxiety of customers. Thanks to the car’s affordability Tata Motors is also likely to accelerate EV adoption in India, which is in line with the government of India’s FAME II policy. The Government of India is also offering various incentives to electric vehicle manufacturers with a high level of localisation as well as benefits to citizens adopting electric vehicles.
Powering the Tata Nexon EV is a 129 PS power, 245 Nm torque electric motor. The high-efficiency Ziptron power unit comes with a permanent magnet AC powertrain with a liquid-cooled nail-penetration tested (AIS-039) battery pack with a 30.2 kWh and 94.5 Ah output with an average consumption of 119.6 Wh per km. Recently leaked type-approval documents suggest that the brand will also offer a more powerful 100 kW/136 PS electric unit.
