Japanese two-wheeler manufacturer Suzuki showcased its updated 2022 Katana sports bike at the EICMA 2021 show in Milan, Italy. Now officially on sale, the 2022 Katana features similar updates as the GSX-S1000, which received a refresh in 2021. First released in 1981, the Suzuki Katana captivated enthusiasts thanks to its unique styling, which made it a retro icon. The company re-introduced and resurrected the Katana nameplate in 2019 by giving it a modern engine and features for enthusiasts.
With a name inspired by the famed Japanese sword, the Katana sports sharp and functional lines throughout its design. Suzuki has decided to introduce a new “Premium Chic” colour concept for the 2022 Katana that features radical craftsmanship details. Compared to its 2020 counterpart, Suzuki offers the new Katana with gold-coloured front forks, colour-coordinated wheels, and grey-coloured rear suspension. With a new dark tone seat, the bike features two new colour options – Metallic Mat Stellar Blue and Solid Iron Grey.
Suzuki has ensured to implement multiple changes towards the engine of the 2022 Katana for additional performance and efficiency. To meet Euro 5 emission norms, Suzuki equipped the engine with new camshafts, revised valve springs, and a new clutch. Additionally, the company also equipped the engine with an updated airbox, a tweaked exhaust, and a decreased valve overlap. Overall, the 999cc, 4-stroke, 4-cylinder liquid-cooled engine now produces 152 PS of power thanks to multiple changes and revisions.
Since Suzuki has based the 2022 Katana on its updated GSX-S1000, it now gets three engine mapping modes. The rider can use these engine modes to alter its response and performance based on the situation or need. In ‘A’ mode, the engine provides the maximum power and acts as the sportiest setting meant for sharp road handling. However, the engine’s ‘C’ mode provides the softest response, which riders can utilise on slippery road surfaces for added safety.
Finally, the ‘B’ mode of the engine offers the perfect balance of power and handling for the rider during daily use. The 2022 Suzuki Katana also gets a 6-speed manual gearbox with a new bi-directional quickshifter for smoother downshifts. Along with a new 5-level traction control system, the bike sports the same alloy beam chassis frame from its 2020 counterpart. Other details include the fully-adjustable, inverted KYB front forks, a monoshock, link-type rear suspension, and dual front disc brakes.
