Mumbai Trans Harbour Link – Length and Interchanges

The Mumbai Trans Harbour Link (MTHL) is a 21.8 km, 6-lane (3+3 lane) highway with 1 emergency lane on both sides. It is the longest sea bridge in the country with interchanges at Sewri in Mumbai, Shivaji-Nagar, SH-54 in Jasai and at Chirle on NH-348, where it terminates. The sea bridge employs both Y and Cloverleaf type interchanges.

Mumbai Trans Harbour Link – Connectivity To Mumbai

The access controlled bridge with Open Road Tolling (ORT) system begins from Sewri, South Mumbai, goes across Thane Creek to the north of Elephanta Island and terminates at Chirle village, near Nhava Sheva. The bridge connects Mumbai with Navi Mumbai saving hours of commute time, reducing traffic jams and vehicular pollution.

People commuting from Navi Mumbai to the southern parts of Mumbai can also use the sea bridge to save time. At peak hours it takes close to 2.5 hours of commute time. Using MTHL commuters can reach Navi Mumbai from Mumbai and vice-a-versa in about 30 minutes.

MTHL also offers a faster connectivity to Mumbai – Pune Expressway, Mumbai – Goa Highway and the JNPT Port. In the near future MTHL bridge will also offer better connectivity of South Mumbai with the Navi Mumbai International Airport.

Mumbai Trans Harbour Link – Cost and Ecology

MHTL has been built using unique products and state-of-the-art construction methods. The road bridge uses OSD (Orthotropic Steel Deck) that spans length of 90 metres to 180 metres as well as concrete superstructures. In addition to this, Reverse Circulation Drilling (RCD) technique was used to reduce disturbance to migratory birds such as Flamingos during its construction.

The bridge also employs Vision Barriers to block the view of the Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC). Noise Barriers also help reduce the disturbance to migratory birds at the Sewri Mudflats. The MHTL has been built with a cost of close to INR 18,000 Crore spread across four packages.
