Written by Nizam Shaikh

A Chinese-owned British heritage brand, MG has revealed the latest generation MG 5 sedan in the home market. The mid-sized sedan made its debut at the Beijing Auto Show 2020 and is expected to be introduced to the international market in the near future as well. The production version of the MG 5 sedan has also made its way to the official online sales channels in China.

On the exteriors, the MG 5 sedan features a sharp front fascia with sweptback projector LED headlamps with integrated LED daytime running lights, a wide and imposing grille with a large MG logo in the centre, a sharp air dam with a splitter effect, rounded wheel arches, a muscular shoulder line, raised bonnet ridges, a curved hip, fastback-style sloping roof design, blacked-out DLO area with chrome line running on top, dual-tone alloy wheels, a boot-lid integrated spoiler, wraparound taillamps with 3D inserts, aero ducts on the rear bumper and trapezoidal exhaust tips. The MG 5 sedan measures 4675mm in length, 1842mm in width and 1473mm in height with a wheelbase of 2680mm.

On the inside, the MG 5 features a multilayered dashboard with a brushed finished dashboard fascia, dual-tone contoured leather upholstery, 12.3-inch combined virtual instruments panel, 10.5-inch floating touchscreen infotainment system with Yamaha premium quality speakers, a sporty gear select lever, flat-bottomed sporty control mounted steering wheel in a perforated leather wrap and contrast stitching, electromechanical parking brake etc. The MG 5 sedan also features ADAS (Advanced Driver Assistance System) features such as Adaptive Cruise Control, Automatic Emergency Braking, intelligent speed system that can read road signs with posted speed limits, 360-degree camera etc.

The MG 5 sedan is powered by a 1.5-litre four-cylinder naturally-aspirated petrol engine that produces 120 PS of power and 150 Nm of torque matched to a 5-speed manual transmission and optionally a CVT automatic transmission. The sedan also features a 1.5-litre four-cylinder turbocharged-petrol engine option that belts out 173 PS of power and 275 Nm of torque matched to a wet-type 7-speed DCT automatic gearbox.

MG Motor India only has a line-up of SUVs on offer on the India portfolio, and the MG 5 sedan could make it to the Indian market as the brands first mid-size sedan offering. The MG 5 is likely to compete with the Hyundai Elantra and Honda Civic in the Indian market if the brand decides to launch the car here.
