MG Motor, the British brand, is set to strengthen its electric vehicle portfolio in the country. The carmaker reportedly plans to introduce a compact MPV and a 5-door SUV based on the E260 EV platform.
The electric MPV, which is likely to be launched by March 2025, is said to be based on the Wuling Cloud EV, currently sold in the Indonesian market. The Wuling Cloud EV is a compact MPV measuring 4.3 meters in length and has a wheelbase of 2.7 meters. It uses a 50.6 kWh battery pack, offering a 460-505 km range on a single charge. This could come with a 5-seat, 6-seat, or 7-seat configuration in India.
In addition to the MPV, MG Motor plans to introduce a 5-seater electric SUV based on the same architecture. The new 5-seater SUV is said to take inspiration from the Baojun Yep Plus. It is expected to be introduced in the latter half of 2025.
With these new pure-electric offerings, MG plans to bridge the gap between the Comet EV and the ZS EV. The company predicts that almost 50% of its total sales will come from EVs in the near future. It has also announced that it will be focusing on local assembly of batteries at its factory in Halol and is also looking at additional land on the outskirts of Vadodara to almost double its capacity to an ambitious 3 lakh units per annum.
MG’s forthcoming electric MPV, is anticipated to hit the market by late 2024 or early 2025. This three-row EV aims to appeal to family buyers and fleet operators who can take advantage of India’s growing EV market. Besides that, the 5-door SUV will compete with the market leader the Tata Nexon.EV and also the Mahindra XUV400.
