MG Motor India just launched the 2022 new MG ZS EV in the Indian market further strengthening its electric vehicle portfolio. However, the MG ZS EV comes with a price tag of more than INR 21 lakh ex-showroom. But, now the brand could be planning to introduce a new sub-INR 10 lakh electric vehicle in the Indian market, for the mass market. Spy shots of a new small car lead us to believe that the brand could be planning to launch the EV in India next year.
Patents of the small car have emerged on the internet which reveal a new model could be in the making. Sources suggest that the new small electric vehicle will come with two doors and four seats. The MG E230 is likely to underpin the SAIC-GM-Wuling’s Global Small Electric Vehicle (GSEV) platform. The platform also underpins the Baojun E100, E200, E300 and E300 Plus. The brand has already showcased the E200 in the Indian market at the Auto Expo 2020 in Delhi.
At the 2020 Auto Expo MG Motor India showcased the E200 electric vehicle which is based on the Baojun E200. But patents of a new electric car lead us to believe that the brand could bring the Wuling Hongguang Mini EV which is likely to be rebranded as the MG E230. In terms of size, the Wuling Hongguang Mini EV measures 2,917mm in length, 1,493mm in width, 1,621mm in height, and a wheelbase of 1,940mm. While these dimensions are shorter than the Maruti Suzuki Alto, the Mini EV is capable of seating four people.
The MG E230 is likely to come with a 20 kWh battery pack which it could provide a range of around 150 km on a single charge. The Mini EV however, comes with a 9.3 kWh to 13.9 kWh battery pack. To put things into perspective, the Tata Tigor EV comes with a 26 kWh battery pack and comes with a price tag between INR 12 to INR 14 lakhs ex-showroom.
