MG Gloster SUV gets on-demand 4-wheel-drive & off-roading abilities

MG has been engaged in a teaser campaign of the brand’s soon to be launched premium SUV the MG Gloster. The company has been demonstrating various new technologies that make the Gloster India’s First Level 1 Autonomous SUV. But this time around it is not another safety or autonomous driving feature but some exciting off-road abilities.

The brand has now revealed that the MG Gloster SUV will come with on-demand 4-wheel-drive technology along with drive modes – Rock, Sand, Mud, Snow etc. These driving modes along with technologies such as the Five Link Integral Rear Suspension and a separate rear differential lock button with Borg Warner Transfer Case allows the premium SUV to traverse difficult terrain with ease. The teaser video also showcases the MG Gloster’s strong water wading abilities.

According to MG, the ‘Gloster’ moniker pays homage to the brand’s British genes and stands for being “Bold, Sturdy, Reliable and Versatile”. The MG Gloster is based on the Maxus D90 SUV available in the Chinese-market, which measures in at 5005mm in length, 1932mm in width and 1875mm in height and comes with a wheelbase of 2950mm. Though the full specifications on the MG Gloster are not available yet the ground clearance is likely to be around 210mm and the Gloster is likely to ride on large 19-inch alloy wheels that will allow the SUV to traverse rough terrain with ease.

Along with the on-demand four-wheel-drive technology that rivals premium off-roaders like Prado and Pajero, the MG Gloster also comes with ADAS (Advanced Driver Assistance Systems) such as Automatic Emergency Braking, Automatic Parking Assist, Adaptive Cruise Control, Front Collision Warning (FCW), Blind Spot Monitor (BSM), Auto Park Assist (APA) and Lane Departure Warning (LDW) and more.

The MG Gloster is also speculated to come with a 2.0-litre Twin Turbo-Diesel engine that produces close to 220 PS of power and 480 Nm of torque matched to an 8-speed automatic transmission. More details on the powertrain are expected to be shared soon.
