MG Gloster to come with 2.0L 218 Hp / 480 Nm Twin-Turbo diesel engine

MG Motor India is gearing up to launch a new premium SUV dubbed the MG Gloster here in the Indian market. The brand has been teasing the Gloster and its features over the past weeks, but the brand did not reveal any details on the powertrain. Now, a media report suggests that the MG Gloster will be powered by a 2.0-litre Twin Turbo-Diesel engine when it is launched in India.

The MG Gloster was unveiled at the 15th edition of the Auto Expo 2020 in February and it was revealed that the Gloster is based on the Maxus D90, an SUV brand owned by the same parent company, sold in the Chinese market. If reports are to be believed, the Maxus D90 features a 2.0-litre 4-cylinder diesel motor that produces 218 Hp of power and 480 Nm of torque and the same diesel motor with BS6 compliance is expected to arrive with the Gloster in the Indian market.

Based on this, the MG Gloster will produce more output than the competition, setting itself into a segment above. To put things into perspective, the Gloster makes significantly more power and torque than the Toyota Fortuner which comes with 177 Hp of power and 450 Nm of torque, the Ford Endeavour’s 170 Hp / 420 Nm engine and the Mahindra Alturas G4 which is powered by a 181 Hp / 420 Nm engine. Also, it is being speculated that the MG Gloster will come with only a diesel option for the Indian market and a detuned version of the 2.0-litre twin turbo-diesel engine will also make it to the MG Hector in 2022.

MG has also revealed that the Gloster will come with on-demand 4-wheel-drive, Advanced Driver Safet Systems (ADAS), Level 1 Autonomous with Automatic Parking Assistance, radar-based adaptive cruise control and collision mitigation systems such as automated emergency braking. The brand also claims that the MG Gloster will be India’s First Level 1 Autonomous Premium SUV.

With its size which is expected to be a little more than 5 metres in length, based on the speculation that the Maxus D90 is 5005mm in length the MG Gloster premium SUV is being benchmarked with luxury SUVs such as the Jeep Grand Cherokee and the Land Cruiser Prado.

The MG Gloster is expected to arrive on the Indian soil via the CBU route and is likely to be priced around the INR 45 lakh mark.
