2020 MG Gloster Luxury SUV officially teased, India launch soon

Chinese-owned British heritage brand MG Motor India has teased the MG Gloster, a Full-Sized Luxury SUV that is set to become the brand’s flagship SUV in the Indian market. The MG Gloster SUV was unveiled in February at the 15th edition of the Auto Expo 2020 in Delhi and last month MG updated the official Indian website confirming the launch of the SUV in the Indian market.

The MG Gloster is being benchmarked with large premium SUVs such as the Land Cruiser Prado and Jeep Grand Cherokee for the Indian market and will be available with a plethora of features similar to the Volvo XC90 setting new benchmarks in the luxury SUV segment. The teaser video also leads us to believe that the MG Gloster will come with advanced safety technology such as park pilot, radar-based adaptive cruise control and collision mitigation systems such as automated emergency braking.

The MG Gloster is also likely to feature highlights such as a large touchscreen infotainment system with internet-connected features, digital instrumentation, front seats with heating, ventilation and massage functions, gesture-controlled powered tailgate, dual-pane panoramic sunroof, LED headlights with integrated LED daytime running lights (DRL), 19-inch alloy wheels and LED taillights.

The MG Gloster is based on the Maxus D90 which is sold in the Chinese market, a marquee owned by SAIC which is also the parent company of MG Motors and in terms of the exterior dimensions the Maxus D90 and the MG Gloster are likely to be similar. The Maxus D90 which is currently for sale in China measures 5005mm in length, 1932mm in width and 1875mm in height and comes with a wheelbase of 2950mm and if the exterior dimensions are identical the MG Gloster will position itself a segment above the Toyota Fortuner and Ford Endeavour which are 4,795mm and 4,903mm in length respectively.

While the brand has not yet revealed any technical specifications on the MG Gloster, the brand is likely to reveal details closer to the launch. But the MG Gloster is expected to come with a 2.0-litre turbo-diesel engine that produces close to 220 PS of power and 480 Nm of torque matched to an 8-speed automatic transmission.

The premium offering from the brand is expected to come via the CBU route and is likely to be priced around the INR 50 lakh mark.
