MG India hits its big with the launch of a new product. This is the Comet EV that retails with a starting price of INR 7.98 lakh (ex-showroom, India). In this comparo we will pit it against its chief rival in terms of pricing, i.e. Tiago EV.
MG Comet EV Vs. Tata Tiago EV – Features
The MG Comet EV comes with a slew of features. The notable ones include wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, steering-mounted controls, keyless entry, manual AC controls, three USB ports and over 55 connected features. In terms of safety, the Comet EV gets a reverse camera, ABS, EBD, tyre pressure monitoring system (TPMS) and sensors as well as dual front airbags.
Talking of features on the Tiago EV, the hatchback is not a disappointment at all. The key features include telematics as standard on all trims, up to 45 connected car features, a contrast roof, fully automatic climate control, leatherette seats, projector auto headlamps, rain-sensing wipers, and cruise control. In the safety department, there’s a massive plus point for the Tiago. As it scored 4 stars in the GNCAP crash tests.
MG Comet EV Vs. Tata Tiago EV – Powertrain
MG Comet EV uses a 17.3kWh battery. This is IP67-rated and hence offers protection from both water and dust. MG claims an ARAI-certified range of 230 km for the MG Comet. MG has also included a 3.3kW onboard charger. With this, the EV will take about 7 hours to fully charge the battery.
The Comet uses a single electric motor that makes 42 HP and 110 Nm of torque. The power is sent to the rear wheels via an automatic gearbox.
As for the Tiago EV, Tata is offering a choice of two battery options. The first one is a 19.2 kWh unit that comes with a claimed range of 250 km. Then we have a 24 kWh pack that gets a certified range of 315 km on a single charge. The electric motor on the Tiago EV makes 60 BHP and 110 Nm of peak torque in the 19.2 kWh battery version. Meanwhile, with the 24 kWh battery version, we get slightly better performance numbers of 74 BHP and 114 Nm.
In terms of charging options, the Tata Tiago EV gets a 3.3kW wall box charger and a 7.2kW AC fast charger. The charging time from 10-100 per cent using a 15A plug point is about 6.9 hours for the medium-range version Meanwhile it is close to 8.7 hours for the long-range version. However, with the 3.3kW charger, the medium-range and long-range versions get charged from 10-100 per cent in 5.1 hours and 6.4 hours respectively.
But using a 7.2kW AC fast charger, the Tata Tiago EV medium-range version can be charged in a good 2.6 hours. Meanwhile, the long-range version will take about 3.6 hours
MG Comet EV Vs. Tata Tiago EV – Price
As for the pricing, MG has put on a sticker price that starts at INR 7.98 lakhs (ex-showroom) for the Comet. Meanwhile for the Tiago EV Tata has an asking price starting at INR 8.69 lakhs (ex-showroom).
