Mercedes-Benz has filed a new ‘EQG’ wordmark at the European Intellectual Property Office leading us to believe that an electric G-Class may be in order. The brand’s parent company Daimler A.G have filed the trademark under the NICE Classification 12 which is for Motor Vehicles and two names have come up EQG 560 and EQG 580.
Speculations are that the brand could be planning to introduce 100% electric vehicles based on the G-Class SUV. EQ in the brand’s nomenclature stands for fully electric vehicles and in the Indian market, Mercedes-EQ launched the EQC 400 their first fully electric SUV that underpins the GLC platforms but wears a completely new top hat and well as completely new interiors and of course the powertrain. The EQG could also use a similar strategy and underpin the chassis and parts of the body from the G-Wagon, but come with new interiors, powertrain and exterior features that differentiate the Internal Combustion Engine SUV from the 100% electric SUV.
The Mercedes-Benz G-Class is one of the iconic SUV in the brand portfolio. In the recent past Mercedes-Benz also announced that the brand has crossed the 4 lakh units production milestone on the Mercedes-Benz G-Class since its debut in 1979. The Mercedes-Benz EQG EV is likely to carry forward the iconic and timeless design of the Mercedes-Benz G-Class and is likely to come with 4×4 with electronic differential locking and offroad abilities.
Recently, Mercedes-Benz revealed the one-off electric SUV concept the EQC 4×4² which features a high ground clearance of 293mm which is more than double the standard EQC and 58mm more than the G Class, 400mm of water fording capability and the capability to traverse over sandy terrain, beaches, rocky terrain and mountain streams. The Mercedes-Benz EQG could use features from the EQC 4×4² such as portal axles instead of conventional axles and portal gears that considerably improve the ground clearance and the ability to crawl over rough terrain.
