Mercedes-Benz plans to go all-electric by 2030. To help with this aim, the company will have an electric vehicle in every segment by 2025. The German carmaker also developed a bespoke EV architecture for small cars. Hence, we believe the new A-Class hatchback will return as an EV only model. When it arrives, the all-electric A-Class will take on cars like the Volkswagen ID.3.
Mercedes-Benz’s A-Class EV & The New MMA Platform
The smallest model in Mercedes-Benz’s EQ line currently is the EQA. The EQA uses the latest generation of the GLA as its base. Additionally, the GLA shares the platform with the current A-Class. The EQA is one of four models which use a modified version of the current ICE-powered architecture. The other models in the carmaker’s line up to do so are – the EQB, EQC SUV and the EQV.
However, Mercedes-Benz is developing an all-new MMA platform. The new platform aims to revolutionize its entry-level EVs that currently use ICE-powered architectures. The smallest model to use the new platform will take on the Volkswagen ID.3. At the same time, it will match the current A-Class for space. The range of the new model will also be on par with its rivals.
Mercedes-Benz’s sole purpose in the MMA platform’s inception is the small car segment. The new platform will bring a considerable step-up in terms of performance and functionality. However, the carmaker will have to deal with the constraints of a smaller-sized car. This means the EQ A-Class will have a smaller battery than other cars to use the same platform. Mercedes-Benz will, however, focus on weight reduction, aerodynamics and higher power density. Hence, it will still improve on the EQA’s 422 km range.
Some of the advantages of the new MMA platform will be a lack of transmission tunnel and a slim battery pack. These result in a car that will have a more airy and spacious interior. In addition to this, the carmaker can also make the model sit closer to the ground. Therefore, making it look less like a crossover and more like a hatchback.
