ABB has unveiled the official mobile charger for the ninth season of the Formula E competition. The mobile charger has been designed keeping in mind the requirements of the Formula E races as well as the ability to move it quite easily across races over different locations.
The charger was designed after collaboration from engineers from the FIA – the motorsport governing body and Formula E. The charger is compact, reliable and safe for the charging of the latest Gen3 cars before the race as well as between sessions. The ABB Formula E Race Charger is designed to be robust, custom and ergonomic which would allow easy transportation and installation.
Specs of the ABB Formula E Race Charger
Each charger is able to deliver a maximum of 160 kW. It is also possible to charge two vehicles simultaneously. This would mean that teams can now charge both their cars from a single charger. The main benefit from this would mean a significantly lower charger footprint and reducing the transmission emissions, as there is no need to carry two chargers per car – which was earlier the case.
Technology of the ABB Formula E Race Charger
The charger is based on the latest charging technology. The technology proven in road car charging applications is the same one used in the race charger, albeit by adapting the technology to suit the demands of the racing application. The company claims a high reliability and consistency of performance across the world, in different environmental conditions as well as when connected to various power sources.
