Maruti working on WagonR AMT

Maruti Suzuki seems to believe a lot in the AMT technology. With the Celerio bringing in as much as 40% sales with the AMT, the company launched the same technology even in the new Alto K10 making it the cheapest automatic car available in India. That’s not it, now, Maruti is being rumoured to have started working on a new AMT equipped variant of the popular WagonR hatchback.

However, the company does not want to price the WagonR AMT as a cheaper automatic product, but wants to offer it at a premium. Reports suggest that the WagonR AMT will be available only in the Stingray edition.

Powering the WagonR is a 1.0L, K10 petrol motor mated to the same 5-speed automated manual gearbox as on the Celerio and Alto K10.

However, delivering the Celerio, Alto K10 and now the WagonR Stingray with an AMT kit could be a problem. Maruti only gets 3,500 AMT kits from Magneti Marelli and is trying to increase that number to 5,000 kits.

Price of the AMT variant could be higher by ~Rs. 30,000 – 40,000 over the regular Stingray model.
