The latest set of Global NCAP crash tests is now out. Maruti Suzuki is again in the news for its safety ratings. It was revealed that the Maruti Suzuki Wagon R bagged 1 star for adult crash rating and 0 stars for child safety.
The Maruti Suzuki Wagon R bagged an overall rating of 19.69 points out of a maximum of 34 points. The hatchback bagged 6.7 points in the frontal offset deformable barrier test. Meanwhile, it scored 13 points on the side movable deformable barrier test. The test did not include a side pole impact test conducted. This is because the hatchback does not have curtain airbags, only two front airbags.
In the frontal impact test, the test concluded that the driver was offered ‘good’ protection for the neck. Meanwhile, it offered ‘adequate’ protection for the head. The driver’s chest was flagged as ‘weak’ protection. While the knees were offered marginal protection, as per the Global NCAP test. The test even claimed that the knees could impact with ‘dangerous structures’ behind the dashboard.
Meanwhile, as per the test, the passenger’s side fared a bit better. It got ‘adequate’ protection offered for the chest, and ‘good’ protection offered for the head and neck. But, the footwell and bodyshell were rated as ‘unstable’ and unable to withstand any further loadings. The Wagon R does not come equipped with Electronic Stability Control as standard. And neither does it comply with GTR9 or UN127 pedestrian safety norms.
In terms of child occupant protection, WagonR was again a disappointment. Maruti Suzuki did not equip the WagonR with ISOFIX nor does it come with a CRS (child restraint system). The test also mentioned that there is no option to disable the front passenger airbag for the rear-facing child restraint system. It also pointed out the absence of three-point seatbelts for all seating positions. As per the tests it claimed that children were subject to a high risk of injuries in both front and rear-facing positions.
