Maruti Suzuki is reportedly testing its Hustler mini SUV in India. This development has sparked considerable interest among automotive enthusiasts and potential buyers alike. The Hustler, known for its quirky design and compact dimensions, has been a popular choice in Japan. However, would it work in India?
The Hustler was recently spotted undergoing testing in India, raising speculation about its imminent launch. The test mule, seen without camouflage, showcased the vehicle’s distinctive boxy silhouette and crossover elements such as roof rails and body cladding. The Hustler’s design, characterized by a flat bonnet and upright stance, is typical of kei cars, which are small, efficient vehicles popular in Japan. The interior, designed to comfortably seat four adults, features a quirky layout that aligns with the vehicle’s overall aesthetic.
One of the critical factors that will determine the Hustler’s success in India is its positioning against competitors. The mini SUV segment in India is currently dominated by models like the Tata Punch, which has received an excellent reception from Indian buyers. The Hustler, with its compact dimensions and unique design, could potentially carve out a niche for itself in this competitive segment. However, it will need to offer compelling features and pricing to attract buyers away from established models.
Another aspect to consider is the Hustler’s engine and performance. In Japan, the Hustler is powered by a 660cc engine available in both naturally aspirated and turbocharged versions. However, for the Indian market, it is likely that Maruti Suzuki will equip the Hustler with a more powerful engine from its existing lineup, possibly a K-series engine, to meet the expectations of Indian consumers. Additionally, the Hustler may not feature the 4WD option available in Japan, focusing instead on a more conventional 2WD setup.
The Hustler’s compact size, measuring just 3,395 mm in length and 1,475 mm in width, might be a double-edged sword in India. While its small footprint makes it ideal for navigating crowded urban environments, it may also be perceived as too small for the mainstream Indian audience, who often prefer larger vehicles. Case in point is the low sales figures of the Suzuki Jimny.
Pricing will be another crucial factor in determining the Hustler’s success. In Japan, the Hustler is priced competitively, starting at around 1.048 million Yen (approximately INR 6.15 lakh). If Maruti Suzuki can maintain a similar pricing strategy in India, the Hustler could appeal to budget-conscious buyers looking for a stylish and practical mini SUV. However, it will need to be positioned carefully to avoid cannibalizing sales of other models in Maruti’s lineup, such as the Ignis.
