Maruti Suzuki Swift completes 15 years in India

Anybody who owns a car in the Indian market, knows that the Maruti Suzuki Swift exists. The Swift has had a huge impact on the overall car industry in India and it redefined what a fun little hatchback should be. Maruti Suzuki is now celebrating 15 years of the Swift in India which has managed to bag top awards in each of its generations. First launched in 2005, the Swift is now in its 3rd generation in the Maruti Suzuki Arena showrooms. Spacious and sporty, the Maruti Suzuki Swift has been the preferred choice for many car buyers in the last decade and a half. Now, the Maruti Suzuki Swift slots in the premium hatchback space where it rivals the likes of Hyundai Grand i10 Nios.

Maruti Suzuki has managed to sell more than 2.2 million units of the Swift hatchback and it has been the number one premium hatchback for 14 years. The brand also allows customers to have their car designed and detailed their way through the i-create customisation. The Maruti Suzuki Swift has close to 30% market share in the premium hatchback space in FR 2019-20. While the first generation Swift brought a fresh new design inside and outside, the brand has successfully evolved that design DNA in the current model and hence even in its latest avatar, the car is unmistakably, a SWIFT.

Maruti Suzuki with the BS6 update has pulled the plug off the diesel variants of the Swift. Which is quite surprising as that particular variant did have demand. However, Maruti Suzuki has discontinued all diesel variants in their product portfolio because they believe that with the BS6 update, only petrol models make sense. Nevertheless, the Swift diesel till the time it was available was a hoot to drive thanks to the lightweight construction and the torque surge from the 1.3L DDiS turbo-diesel motor.

The BS6 compliant Maruti Suzuki Swift on sale comes powered by a 1.2L, 4-cylinder petrol motor producing 61 kW of power @ 6000 RPM and 113 Nm of torque @ 4200 RPM matched to a 5-speed manual or 5-speed AMT gearbox.
