Suzuki Motor Gujarat Pvt. Ltd, which is a 100 per cent subsidiary of Suzuki Motor Corporation, started the operation at its third unit at the Ahmedabad-based manufacturing facility. With this, Maruti Suzuki has three manufacturing facilities, the other two being located at Gurgaon and Manesar. With this new unit in the third manufacturing facility, the automaker will aim to produce a total of 3 million units per year. Suzuki Motor Gujarat Pvt. will supply all the produced vehicles to MSIL.
As of now, only two units namely, Plant A and Plant B were operational each with an annual production capacity of 2.5 lakh units. After the starting of Plant C, which also has a production capacity of 2.5 lakh units, now the annual capacity of MSIL’s third manufacturing facility stands at 7.5 lakh units. With the two manufacturing hubs, the production capacity stood at 15 lakh units, and now with the third manufacturing facility, the figure will reach 22.5 lakh units. SMG (Suzuki Motor Gujarat Pvt Limited) established in 2014 aimed to meet the rising demand for MSIL cars in India. Plant A was set operational in February 2017, followed by Plant B along with the Power Plant in January 2019. Currently, this Gujarat manufacturing produces the Maruti Suzuki Baleno, Toyota Glanza under the Toyota-Suzuki partnership and Swift. As per sources, Plant C will take up the responsibility to manufacture the best-selling sedan in the country, the Dzire. Till now, the Manesar plant produced the Dzire, but after this new plant started, it remains unclear if SMIL will decide to put the entire production load of the Dzire to this manufacturing facility in Gujarat.
Recently, Maruti Suzuki released its sales report for March 2021 in which the country’s largest car manufacturer sold a total of 1,67,014 units. The company launched its ever-green Swift with a new engine and some minor aesthetic updates. There are rumours that MSIL is planning to launch Jimny for the Indian market, which is already a hit product overseas.
