India’s leading automaker, Maruti Suzuki concluded its July 2023 financial records on a positive trajectory. The carmaker posted impressive growth across various vehicle segments. To begin, the mini car category that consists of models like Alto and S-Presso witnessed a total sale of 9,590 units. This is in stark contrast to the preceding year’s performance of 20,333 units. This showcased a noticeable shift in consumer preferences toward slightly more upscale vehicles boasting enhanced features.
The compact car segment, which has consistently performed well, experienced a decline as well. The sales dropped from 67,102 units the previous month to 84,818 units a year ago. In aggregate, Maruti Suzuki’s mini and compact vehicle sales totalled 76,692 units. This reflects a significant drop of over 28,000 units compared to the previous year’s 105,151 units. Year-to-date sales for the current fiscal year (FY 2023-2024) reached 327,917 units, down from the 359,015 units recorded a year earlier.
Within the mid-size category, Maruti Suzuki has a single offering, Ciaz. This saw a decrease in sales, dropping from 1,379 units the previous year to 1,348 units.
However, the standout success for Maruti Suzuki occurred in the utility vehicle (UV) sector. Models like Brezza, Ertiga, Fronx, Grand Vitara, Invicto, Jimny, S-Cross, and XL6 contributed to an impressive 62,049 UV sales in July 2023, a substantial increase from the 23,272 units sold the prior year.
In the compact van segment, Eeco emerged as the sole contender, with sales of 12,037 units in the last month. This reflects a slight decline compared to the 13,048 units sold the previous year. Consequently, the total domestic passenger vehicle sales amounted to 154,685 units, signifying considerable growth compared to the 142,850 units sold in July 2022. The year-to-date analysis further confirms the upward trend, with total domestic passenger vehicle sales reaching 566,181 units, up from 512,004 units last year.
Talking of commercial vehicles (CVs), Maruti Suzuki’s Super Carry contributed 2,559 units to the overall sales count last month. Additionally, Maruti Suzuki maintains a successful partnership with Toyota India, marketing the Toyota Glanza (a rebadged Baleno). Sales to original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) reached 4,746 units, a decline from the previous 9,939 units. This decline is due to Toyota’s inclusion of the Urban Cruiser (a rebadged Vitara Brezza) in the previous year’s offerings.
