Maruti Suzuki sells 160,752 units in January 2021, clocks 4.3% MoM growth

Maruti Suzuki India Limited has announced that the brand has recorded sales of 160,752 units in the month of January starting the year with a 4.3% growth when compared to the same period in the last year. To put things into perspective, the Indo-Japanese car manufacturer sold 154,123 units in January 2020. In January 2021, Maruti Suzuki registered sales of 142,604 units in the domestic market and 12,445 units were exported. The brand also sold 5,703 units to other OEMs. 

Sub-segment-wise, Maruti Suzuki registered sales of 25,153 units of Alto and S-Presso, 76,935 units sales for the WagonR, Swift, Celerio, Ignis, Baleno, Dzire and Tour S, 1,347 units sales of the Ciaz, 23,887 units sales of Ertiga, S-Cross, XL6, Vitara Brezza and Gypsy, 11,680 units of the Eeco, 3,602 units sold for the Super Carry. The Maruti Suzuki Ciaz contributes mainly to the Month-on-Month sales figure with a growth of 61% over the same period last year. Maruti Suzuki had sold 835 units of the Ciaz in January 2020. 

But for the period of April-January 2020-21, Maruti Suzuki recorded sales of 1,126,378 units (Total Domestic + Export) which is -15.5% when compared to the same period in April-January 2019-20 which recorded sales of 1,332,395 units. But do keep in mind that due to the COVID-19 pandemic and the lockdown associated with it the sales in 2020 were hampered. 

Recently, Maruti Suzuki also announced that the Maruti Suzuki Swift had become the best-selling car in the premium hatchback segment for the calendar year 2020, with more than 2.3 million units sold in the past 15 years. In CY 2020, the brand sold more than 160,700 units, despite COVID-19 pandemic situation. The premium hatchback has also been honoured with accolades such as the Indian Car of the Year (ICOTY) award three times, one for each generation. 

In other news, Maruti Suzuki has also started manufacturing and exports of the Suzuki Jimny compact off-roader from the brand’s Gurugram manufacturing plant in India. The much-popular SUV shares the same specifications from the car manufactured at the Kosai production line in Shizouka Prefecture and is currently being exported to Latin American countries such as Columbia and Peru via the Mundra port.
