Finally, the Maruti Suzuki S-Cross is off the shelf in India. This move is not surprising. With the launch of the new Grand Vitara, we had somewhat anticipated this. Introduced in 2015, the S-Cross was the brand’s flagship crossover SUV. Fun fact, it was also the first model g on sale via the brand’s Nexa dealership chain.
Story Of S-Cross In India
The S-Cross arrived in the market exactly when the SUV segment was heating up. Its chief main rival at that time was Renault Duster and Hyundai Creta, which were getting popularity at that time, the S Cross came with two diesel engine options – the good old 1.3-litre Multijet engine and a more powerful 1.6-litre diesel motor. Both units were from Fiat. But it was the 1.6-liter diesel unit that became an instant success.
Then in 2017, The S-Cross received a mid-cycle update. Under this, the SUV got a more upright BMW-like nose. The larger 1.6-liter diesel engine was called off and the 1.3-liter diesel was the only engine option available. But now this engine option got Maruti’s mild-hybrid tech, also known as Smart Hybrid. Interestingly, Maruti Suzuki never offered a diesel-automatic version of the S-Cross. And this was also one of the main reasons why the S-Cross never really took off, unlike most of the other Maruti Suzuki titles on sale.
In April 2020, the S-Cross switched to a petrol-only powertrain, as more stringent BS6 norms took effect. A 1.5-liter K-series petrol engine with mild-hybrid tech did the duty in the S-Cross. This time, Maruti also added the option of an automatic gearbox to it.
Sales Volume Not Much For S-Cross
Since its launch, Maruti Suzuki has sold a total of around 1.69 lakh units. And just to clarify this is not a big number for the brand when compared to its other models’ sales volume.
