Maruti has introduced a new powertrain in the Fronx. The Indian carmaker will now offer CNG in two variants – Sigma and Delta. The prices are set at INR 8,41,500 and INR 9,27,500 ex-showroom respectively.
Under the hood, the 1.2-litre K-Series DualJet, dual VVT engine now runs on CNG. The engine now develops 77.5 PS @ 6,000 rpm and 98.5 Nm @ 4,300 rpm. When running on petrol the same engine puts out 89.7 PS and 113 Nm. A 5-speed manual gearbox is offered as standard. The fuel efficiency of this engine is claimed to be 28.51 km/kg.
In terms of CNG-specific updates, the Fronz will get an updated driver information display to accommodate CNG fuel levels, a CNG/petrol switchover button, a fire extinguisher and a CNG tank in the boot.
Based on demand, it is also possible that Maruti could offer CNG on the top-spec Zeta or Alpha variants at a later date.
Maruti has incorporated its tried and tested CNG technology called as the S-CNG in the newest SUV from the company. The Fronx is currently offered with a 1.2-litre NA and a 1.0-litre turbo petrol engine. This new CNG model will help the Fronx reach a wider audience.
Further, following the discontinuation of diesel engines, Maruti has been lacking an option for those customers which have high annual running. Hence, the move to launch CNG variants. While it is not a replacement for diesel, those on the fence could be swayed to buy the Fronx CNG thanks to this.
Earlier this year, Maruti Suzuki launched their Fronx crossover in the Indian market. This car will rival the likes of Renault Kiger and Nissan Magnite. Although positioned as an aerodynamic SUV, this is a Baleno based crossover and prices start at INR 7.46 lakh ex-showroom. Maruti Suzuki will retail the Fronx via Nexa premium showrooms.
