Maruti has unveiled the Baleno-based crossover at the 2023 Auto Expo. Now, it has been reported that Toyota’s version of the same could go on sale by the end of this year. Internally named as Toyota A15, the crossover will be priced around INR 6.5-9.5 lakh price range.
Like the Fronx, the A15 too will be based on the Heartect platform. It will come with many of the same features of the Maruti Fronx, but with changes to the exterior and interiors. Like the Grand Vitara and Urban Cruiser Hyryder, there will be many similarities in the Fronx and A15, but at the same time each of these crossovers will come with its own distinct identity.
Internationally, Toyota sells the Yaris Cross, which could be the design inspiration for the A15 in India. While there is not much room to play around with the design, the exterior elements like the bumpers, rear quarter panels and more could be visually distinct from the Fronx.
Toyota has discontinued the Urban Cruiser, hence it is likely that this A15 would sit in its place. The Toyota lineup will start with Glanza, A15 and the Urban Cruiser Hyryder while on the higher end will have the likes of Innova, Hilux, Fortuner, Carmy and Vellfire.
Toyota could launch the car towards the end of the calendar year.
It is likely to get the same engine options from the Fronx. These include a 1.0-litre turbo petrol and the 1.2-litre K Series NA petrol. The 1.0 engine makes 100 PS and 148 Nm of peak torque and comes with a 5-speed manual or a 6-speed automatic. Meanwhile the 1.2 makes 90 PS and 113 Nm and is paired with a 5-speed manual or a 5-speed AMT gearbox.
