Maruti Suzuki is gearing up to bring one more product to the electric vehicle (EV) market with the development of an affordable electric hatchback based on the Suzuki eWX concept. Codenamed Y2V, this entry-level EV is expected to hit production by 2028. The Y2V hatchback aims to cater to the growing demand for budget-friendly electric vehicles in India.
The Y2V will feature a 35 kWh battery pack, offering a range of approximately 450 km on a single charge. This range is almost double that of its competitors, the Tata Tiago EV and MG Comet EV. The hatchback is designed to meet the needs of urban commuters with short commutes and daily city driving. More details on the specification are not available yet.
Maruti Suzuki plans to launch six EVs by FY2031, with the Y2V hatchback being a crucial part of its strategy to capture the entry-level EV segment. The company aims to achieve a production volume of around 2.5 lakh units over five years. The Y2V will be developed locally to keep costs under control and ensure affordability.
The development of the Y2V hatchback is part of Maruti Suzuki’s broader EV expansion plan, which includes the upcoming launch of the eVitara electric SUV later this year. The company expects EVs to account for 15% of its total sales by the end of the decade.
The eWX concept was showcased and the Bangkok Motor Show and we expect it to be on display at the Bharat Mobility Global Expo 2025 in Delhi. We expect some more concepts to be on display as well.
The development of the Maruti Suzuki eWX based electric budget hatchback highlights the company’s commitment to expanding its presence in the EV market. With its competitive range and focus on affordability, the Y2V hatchback is poised to attract urban commuters looking for an economical and eco-friendly commuting option.
