Maruti Suzuki adds wireless Apple CarPlay & Android Auto to Baleno

Written by AnantaSaranNayak

Maruti Suzuki is rolling out a software update for the SmartPlay Pro+ infotainment system in the Baleno. The over-the-air (OTA) update is currently available for the Zeta and Alpha variants of the Baleno. With this update, the system gets a slew of new features. This includes wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto and turn-by-turn navigation for the heads-up display and MID.

Earlier this year, the carmaker introduced the same features on the Brezza through a similar OTA update. Hence, we assume we could see this feature on more models in the future.

Maruti Suzuki Baleno Cross In The Making

Maruti Suzuki is working on a new crossover based on the Baleno premium hatchback. Code-named the YTB, the new Baleno-based crossover will make its debut at the upcoming 2023 Indian Auto Expo. Maruti Suzuki is aggressively testing the YTB ahead of the official launch. This is evident from the numerous screenshots we received to date.

The YTB will have a footprint similar to that of the Baleno albeit with more muscles. The profile of the crossover will get flared wheel arches while the rear-end styling will most likely remain the same as that of the Baleno. The engines and gearboxes too will continue to that from the Baleno. Interestingly, the 1-litre turbo petrol engine – previously seen on the Baleno RS could make a comeback in the crossover.

What Is The Maruti Suzuki Baleno Cross?

Maruti Suzuki will position the Baleno Cross below the Maruti Brezza. Thus, in terms of both pricing and positioning, the crossover based on the Baleno is likely to sit under the Brezza. Given the slight changes more than the regular hatchback. We expect the Cross to be marginally pricier than the Baleno.

The Baleno sold in India gets a 1.2 litre 4 cylinder K12C petrol engine that puts out 88 BHP-113 Nm. This engine is also available with a CNG-Petrol dual fuel option. 5-speed manual and automated manual transmissions (AMT) are on offer with this motor. This could follow for the Baleno Cross as well.

As for competition for the Baleno YTB crossover, there’s no direct competition currently in the market. The i20 Active is no longer on sale, and same is the case with Volkswagen Cross Polo and the Fiat Avventura. In price terms though, the crossover will lock its horns against many sub-4 metre compact SUVs priced much lower than the Maruti Brezza. This includes Nissan Magnite, Renault Kiger and Tata Punch.
