People waiting for the Mahindra Thar 5-door will have to wait longer. As per reports, we won’t see the SUV make its mark at least not this year. First confirmed for production in 2021, the 5-door Thar would have gone on sale sometime this year. But at the announcement of its annual results, Mahindra hinted at bringing in the more family-friendly version of the off-roader in 2024. This is because the company currently has a backlog of nearly 3 lakh SUVs for delivery. Thus, we won’t see any new Mahindra SUVs launched in 2023.
The Thar 3-door recently crossed the 1 lakh units production mark. And we are very aware of that excitement of the five-door Thar. Being a 5-door, Thar will have a longer wheelbase and more room for second-row passengers. Thar has been a sensational product from Mahindra. It has been a success story for the Indian SUV maker, as it recently crossed the 1 lakh units production milestone. The introduction of a more affordable rear-wheel-drive model further added impetus. Mahindra is now averaging about 14,000 bookings for the off-roader on a monthly basis.
Given the rising demand, this has resulted in long waiting periods for specific variants. So much so, some variants have a waiting of over a year and a half. The newly added RWD version too has been getting a lot of demand. Thus, Mahindra is now working to try and get the waiting period a little under control. The waiting period for that has gone up very dramatically and thus they need to ramp production to counter that.
Thar 5-door will very much mirror the 3-door model. Infact, the Thar 5-door will most likely carry over the 3-door model’s powertrains. Once launched, it will become the closest rival to the Maruti Suzuki Jimny, which will soon arrive in its five-door avatar.
