Mahindra Thar has been a blockbuster hit ever since its launch back in October 2020. Within just 18 days of the launch, the SUV achieved more than 15,000 bookings. Recently, in order to adjust the supply and demand curve, Mahindra has decided to further ramp up the production of the Thar.
The High Demand and Waiting Period
The massive demand of the Thar is no longer a surprising fact as the waiting period has crossed 39 weeks in some cities. In fact, Mahindra had reported that the Thar had crossed the 20,000 booking mark in October itself with the waiting period going as high as six months. Then, in November Mahindra had stopped taking bookings for a brief period of time and to further curtail the demand, Mahindra decided to delist the AX and the side-facing rear seat variants. Further, it has announced that Mahindra will increase the production capacity of the Thar by 50% and thus from January 2021 the manufacturing facility is producing 3,000 units up from 2,00o units.
The Recent Demand and Market Situation
From the start of 2021, Mahindra mentioned that the demand for SUVs is still very high and witnessed around 6,000 bookings in January 2021. The automatic variant of the SUV accounts for 45% of the sales meanwhile 25% of the customers opted for the petrol powertrain. Mahindra confirmed that as of February 1, 2021, the cumulative bookings for the new Mahindra Thar has crossed 38,500 mark. The inadequate supply of crucial components like steel and semiconductors which make up the key elements of the car like the ECU has further put the supply chain of the Thar on the back foot.
Other news and Upcoming New Launches
Mahindra has quite a busy schedule for 2021 as number of launches are planned across the entire year. The most anticipated one being the second-gen XUV500 which will be followed by the all-new Scorpio whose launch is expected to happen in mid-2021. Recently, there were rumours suggesting that a new Bolero Neo is also on the cards and the launch will most likely happen at the end of this year.
