With eventual transition to electric vehicles inevitable, Mahindra has showcased the Vision Thar.e electric SUV concept. This will be an all new vehicle and not based on the current-generation Thar.
Electric Thar : Future Ahead?
The Thar.e comes with raised suspension, high ground clearance and a boxy design. It comes with squared fenders and exposed door hinges.
The front headlight consists of square headlamps and a rectangular grille. There are triple LED elements on the driver side and Thar.e lettering on the passenger side. The boxy shape of the car bears some resemblance to the Land Rovers of yesteryears.
At the back, the Thar.e Concept gets blacked out elements. The rear wheels are visible from the back and they are chunky and placed quite wide.
Coming to the interiors, the Thar.e gets a simple dashboard. There are grab handles at each end while the driver gets a three-spoke steering. Infotainment duties are handled by a large screen in the middle.
Thar.e AWD Electric SUV Concept Powertrain & Chassis
Unlike the current Thar, this Thar.e Concept will be based on Mahondra’s dedicated EV platform. The INGLO platform will also underpin other electric cars from the Mahindra stable in the future.
Mahindra might offer a dual motor setup on the Thar.e. These could be sourced from Volkswagen. They could be rated at 80 kW / 135 Nm front and 210 kW / 535 Nm at the back. With so much torque on offer, there could be no need for a low-range gearbox.
The Thar.e could be offered with multiple battery options. These could be 60 kWh and 80 kWh options. Range could be around 325 and 400 km respectively.
Popularity of the Thar
The Thar has 68,000 open bookings. The Thar further gets 10,000 new bookings every month. The recently launched Thar RWD has been very successful and has an over 15-month waiting period. This is only increasing day by day. The 4WD in comparison has a 5-month waiting.
With electrification the way forward, Mahindra might be keen to start with a low volume niche product before moving on to other electric segments. Currently, the carmaker already has the XUV400 EV on sale.
