Mahindra launches XEV 9e in India priced at INR 21.9 Lakh

Mahindra & Mahindra has unveiled its latest electric SUV, the XEV 9e, with prices starting at INR 21.9 lakh (ex-showroom). This new model is part of Mahindra’s ambitious “Born Electric” range, built on the company’s in-house INGLO platform.

Design and Features

The XEV 9e sports a sleek, modern design with triangular headlights, a full-width DRL strip, and aerodynamic wheels. The SUV also features a closed grille, a swooping bonnet, and an illuminated Mahindra EV logo. Inside, the XEV 9e boasts a luxurious cabin with a panoramic sunroof, a triple-screen layout, and a touch-based control panel. The SUV also includes advanced features like a 360-degree camera, dual-zone climate control, and a Harman-Kardon-sourced 16-speaker music system.

XEV 9e Performance and Range

The XEV 9e is powered by a 79 kWh battery pack, offering a real-world range of 656 km on a single charge. The SUV supports ultra-fast charging, enabling a 20-80% charge in just 20 minutes. With a power output of 228 hp, the XEV 9e can accelerate from 0 to 100 kmph in 6.8 seconds, providing a dynamic driving experience.

XEV 9e Market Positioning

Mahindra’s new EV is positioned as a premium offering in the electric SUV market. It will compete with the upcoming Tata Harrier EV. However, its specs pits it against the Hyundai IONIQ 5 and the Kia EV6 as well. The Hyundai IONIQ 5, with a 72.6 kWh battery, delivers a range of 631 km and is priced at INR 45.9 lakh (ex-showroom). Similarly, the Kia EV6, powered by a 77.4 kWh battery, provides a range of 528 km and comes with a price tag of INR 59.95 lakh (ex-showroom). While both the IONIQ 5 and EV6 boast more powerful batteries and a host of advanced features, the XEV 9e stands out with its competitive pricing while offering similar range and performance.

Our Thoughts

Mahindra has launched two good options in the premium EV space. The pricing is competitive and the feature list is long. With the new Born Electric range, Mahindra might just set a new benchmark in the EV market. What remains to be seen is how these products perform in real world scenarios.
