Mahindra is planning to launch two new cars in the electric vehicle space, eKUV100 and eXUV300. The electric vehicles are based on their ICE counterparts and strengthen Mahindra’s position in the personal electric mobility market. Mahindra at the Auto Expo 2020 showcased the concepts of both the eKUV100 and eXUV300.
The eKUV100 was scheduled to make an entry before the end of 2020 and the eXUV300 in early 2021. But the COVID-19 pandemic happened, and Mahindra delayed both the launch to 2021. Now the second wave of the pandemic has hit our country, And by far, this is the worst COVID-19 wave with nearly 400,000 infections in a day, an all-time high in the country.
Amidst, the pandemic Mahindra has delayed its plans to launch the eKUV100 and eXUV300 to 2022. Sources also suggest that Mahindra will be 30% to 50% ready in the EV space between the years 2025 to 2030. Currently, Mahindra offers the eVerito in the personal mobility space and Treo and Treo Zor in the commercial vehicle segment.
The Mahindra eKUV100 boast of becoming the most affordable electric vehicle offered in the Indian market. The EV is likely to come with a price tag of INR 8.25 lakh ex-showroom. This price tag will make the EV available not very far off from the ICE counterpart in terms of the price. Powering the eKUV100 is a 40kW (54.4hp) electric motor that draws power from a 15 kWh liquid-cooled battery pack. The power unit produces 120 Nm of torque and can deliver a range of approximately 150 km on a single charge.
The eXUV300 features the MESMA (Mahindra Electric Scalable Modular Architecture) platform, which will underpin future Mahindra Electric vehicles. While powertrain details of the eXUV300 are not available, speculations are that the car could use a powerful enough battery to enable a range of around 300 km on a single charge. The power unit is also likely to produce around 250 Nm of torque and compete with the Tata Nexon EV in the electric vehicle segment.
