It has been reported that Mahindra has discontinued the Alturas G4. The SUV is no longer seen on the official website. Further, bookings have also been said to be ceased.
Ssangyong-Mahindra Partnership
Mahindra broke its ties with Korean carmaker Ssangyong in January 2022 due to the Covid-19 pandemic. The 10-year-old alliance was a learning experience for both auto majors. The Indian carmaker gained insights into Korean culture and work ethics. It has also stated that the partnership led to the eventual creation of the XUV300, one of the highest-selling SUVs in India.
Mahindra Alturas G4
The Alturas G4 is nothing but a Ssangyong Rexton G4. Earlier this year, Mahindra had silently introduced a new variant to the Alturas G4 lineup. The SUV was available in a 4×2 base-spec variant and missed out on features that were available on the 4×4 variant. So the 2WD High variant gets the features of the top-end model but comes in a 2WD.
The Alturas G4 powertrain uses a 2.2-litre 4-cylinder turbo-diesel engine. The engine is matched to a Mercedes-Benz-sourced 7-speed torque converter automatic transmission. The 2,157cc engine makes 178.5 HP at 3,800 rpm and 420 Nm of torque between 1,600 rpm and 3,800 rpm.
The Alturas G4 was assembled in India using completely knocked-down kits (CKD).
Mahindra’s current sales numbers and expansion
The carmaker sold 58,303 vehicles. In the Utility vehicle segment, Mahindra sold 30,238 vehicles in November 2022. Mahindra’s monthly production capacity is set to increase. The figure will go up from 29,000 units in Q4 FY2022 to 49,000 units by Q4 of FY2024, as confirmed by the company recently. The carmaker also announced an investment of INR 7,900 crore over a period of the next three years. This would lower waiting times for customers of the Thar, Scorpio-N and the XUV700 – all three vehicles have been a market hit.
