Mahindra could launch XUV.e9 as RWD model only

Mahindra is reportedly planning to launch its upcoming XUV.e9 as a rear-wheel-drive (RWD) model only. The XUV.e9, essentially a coupe version of the popular XUV700, is set to feature an electric powertrain similar to that of the BE.05. However, unlike its sibling, the XUV.e9 is expected to be available exclusively with a single electric motor powering the rear axle. This RWD configuration is anticipated to provide a dynamic driving experience, catering to enthusiasts who prioritize handling and performance.

Design and Features

The XUV.e9 stands out with its coupe-SUV body style, characterized by a sleek silhouette and a tech-forward design. The front fascia is dominated by a massive faux grille and a sophisticated headlight cluster, giving it a distinctive and premium look. The liberal use of piano black elements further enhances its upscale appeal.

Inside, the XUV.e9 is expected to debut Mahindra’s new three-screen interior setup, which includes a dedicated screen for the front passenger. These 12.3-inch displays feature Liquid Optically Clear Adhesive (LOCA) bonding and an oleophobic coating to reduce smudges. The interior, while borrowing elements from the XUV700, promises to offer more advanced technology and features, ensuring a luxurious and connected driving experience.

Market Positioning and Expectations

Mahindra’s decision to launch the XUV.e9 as an RWD model is seen as a strategic move to differentiate it from other electric SUVs in the market. By focusing on a single-motor RWD setup, Mahindra aims to offer a more affordable yet performance-oriented option for buyers. This approach is expected to resonate well with executives looking for a stylish and practical EV without the complexity and cost associated with all-wheel-drive systems.

The XUV.e9 is part of Mahindra’s broader strategy to revitalize its EV lineup following the lukewarm response to the XUV400. With the introduction of the ‘Born Electric’ range, Mahindra is pulling out all the stops to make a significant impact in the EV market. Competitive pricing is expected to be a key factor, with the XUV.e9 likely to be positioned aggressively to attract a wider audience.
