Mahindra Bolero with ABS reaches dealerships

The updated Mahindra Bolero has started to reach dealerships in its ABS equipped model which is due to launch soon. The Bolero has been a very successful model and has been available in the Indian market since 2001. Mahindra has sold almost 80,000 units last year and the sales are still strong. It is logical that Mahindra will not be discontinuing the popular model anytime soon and hence it has been given an upgrade to remain compliant with the new strict safety norms.

From 1st of April 2019, all M1 category vehicles are required to be fitted with Anti-lock Braking System (ABS) as standard equipment. The SUV was not available with the ABS option even on its top-spec variant. Mahindra has now upgraded the Bolero with ABS and will be introducing the new updated model soon. As per the spied images, the ABS indicator is located near the auto start/stop switch instead of the instrument cluster.

The mandate is not only limited to ABS, but from 1st July 2019 all M1 category vehicles are required to have a driver and co-driver seat-belt reminder, over-speed alert system, reverse parking sensors, manual override on the central locking system for unlocking doors in event of an emergency and driver side airbags as standard part of the pack. The vehicles will soon have to clear driver and passenger safety norms as directed by the BNVSAP (Bharat New Vehicle Safety Assessment Program) mandate, which will come in to effect from 1st October 2019. From 1st October 2020 pedestrian safety will also be accounted for in the BNVSAP crash tests.

The engines will also have to conform to new BSVI emission standards that will be enforced from 1st April 2020.

The current Mahindra Bolero is powered by two BSIV compliant engines which are as follows:-

  • 2.5-litre, m2DiCR engine which produces 62 HP of power @ 3200 RPM and 195 Nm of torque @ 1400-2200 RPM coupled to an all-synchromesh NGT 520, 5-speed gearbox with an overdrive 5th gear.
  • 1.5-litre, mHawk, D70 engine which produces 70 BHP of power @ 3600 RPM and 195 Nm of torque @ 1499-2200 RPM coupled to a 5-speed gearbox. This engine currently powers the Mahindra Bolero Power + variant.

Both these engines are expected to be upgraded to BSVI emission norms before 1st April 2020.
