Mahindra is feeling the heat in the SUV segment. Almost every car manufacturer in the Indian market is offering a SUV / UV and gaining market share. Mahindra is now eyeing the premium 7-Seater SUV market dominated by the Toyota Fortuner, and revealed a rival at the Auto Expo 2018. The SsangYong G4 Rexton was showcased with Mahindra branding.
However, no launch timeline is shared at the moment and neither the official name for the product has been announced. Mahindra is just gauging customer response from this showcase. The new G4 Rexton is a global SUV and when launched, will be the flagship product for Mahindra.
Powering this new SUV would be a 2.2L, turbocharged diesel motor. This block will produce 178 BHP of power and 420 Nm of torque. The new Rexton also comes with a 7-speed automatic gearbox. Features on the new G4 Rexton includes HID headlamp, LED DRLs, electric sunroof, dual zone automatic climate control, ventilated seats, 8” touch screen infotainment system with GPS navigation, 9 airbags, electric parking brake, etc.
When launched, the new G4 Rexton will have to pick up a fight with the Ford Endeavour, Skoda Kodiaq & segment leater Toyota Fortuner. But, Mahindra will most likely undercut all the rivals when it comes to pricing.
From the concept, the SUV, which is a production-ready car, does feel luxurious by Mahindra standards. Fit & finish looked decent, and with a price undercutting the rivals, it should find some buyers. Will the fate of this new Rexton be better than the older one?
