Lexus has unveiled the new GX 550 SUV. This is the 3rd-generation model that replaces the vehicle that was launched back in 2010. The new GX 550 comes with new underpinnings, body shell, interiors, engine and gearbox options and off-road hardware. For the first time, Lexus plans to sell the GX in other markets like Japan and Australia, making it in right-hand drive configuration for the first time.
Based on the new TNGA-F platform, the Lexus GX shares its underpinnings with the Toyota Land Cruiser and Lexus LX. In the future, the same platform will spawn the next-gen Hilux and Fortuner. Even the new Toyota Tacoma is based on this architecture.
In terms of design, the GX 550 gets a butch look with square design elements. As compared to the outgoing model, the latest one is more sculpted. At the front, the SUV gets its characteristic Lexus Spindle grille supported by a chiselled bumper. The glass area is big as well and the windscreen is quite upright.
When seen from the sides, the GX 550 gets a flat shape with an upward design kink on the rear door windows.
Towards the back, the SUV now gets connected tail lamps in a horizontal orientation. There is Lexus badging in the middle. Just like the LX, the GX 550 gets a steeply raked rear window and an upright tailgate.
On the inside, the GX 550 comes with many luxury features. These include a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster and a large 14-inch touchscreen infotainment unit, dials for AC controls and 4WD control buttons on the dash. Some variants also get an optional head-up display.
Customers can opt for either 6-seats or 7-seat configuration. In the former, there are captain seats for the middle row occupants.
Apart from the usual variants, Lexus is also offering a couple of off-road focused trims. These are the Overtrail and Overtrail+. The SUVs configured in this trim come with black accents on fenders, grille and an aluminium skid plate. It gets 18-inch wheels and optional 33-inch tyres. Owners of these versions will get features like crawl control, downhill assist control, 3D multi-terrain monitor and Electronic-Kinetic Dynamic Suspension. The last adds more wheel articulation, which will make it a better off-roader.
Meanwhile the Overtrail+ gets additional massage seats and power extending function.
In the North American markets, the GX will get a 3.5-litre V6 engine. This is rated at 349 HP and comes with a 10-speed automatic gearbox. It gets a full-time four-wheel drive system with a lockable centre diff as standard. The Overtrail variants come with an additional lockable rear diff.
Lexus might introduce a diesel engine at a later stage.
