In 2024, Lamborghini is entering the endurance racing category with the World Endurance Championship (WEC) and IMSA WeatherTech Sportscar Championship. This is the first time that the Italian carmaker will participate in these events. To this end, the carmaker has revealed the SC63 LMDh hybrid prototype which will be the main car for the aforementioned races.
Lamborghini SC3 comes with a meticulous paint job which has been designed at the carmaker’s Centro Stile design studio. It gets elements which are now standard on road cars. These include Y-shaped headlamps and tail lights.
Compliant with the LMDh rules, the SC53 will get a 680 HP hybrid engine. Along with it there will be a standard gearbox, battery and motor-generator. The 3.8-litre V8 engine comes with dual turbochargers, which are mounted on the outside of the V. This is claimed to offer better cooling and serviceability. Lamborghini says this design could be important in endurance events as components tend to get hot and need to be able to withstand the high stress for hours on end.
The engine also weighs less thereby helping with the centre of gravity, which results in improved handling.
LMDh permits chassis to be procured from one of the four constructors. Lamborghini will be using one from Ligier. As Lamborghini is Ligier’s first LMDh partner, the company claims it can offer a better chassis with greater freedom. Lamborghini will be able to tweak multiple aspects including the front suspension design as it is starting from scratch.
The 2024 WEC will be the main event for the SC63. This will include the famed 24 Hours of Le Mans. A second car will race in the IMSA WeatherTech Sportscar Championship in the USA. Both the cars will be entered by the Iron Lynx racing team from Italy. The racing team already has Lamborghini Huracán GT3 racers. The drivers for the SC63 include factory drivers Mirko Bortolotti, Andrea Caldarelli along with F1 drivers Romain Grosjean and Daniil Kyvat.
