Lamborghini developing its 1st LMDh prototype

Lamborghini Squadra Corse announced it is developing its first LMDh prototype. The model will make its debut in 2024 at the FIA World Endurance Championship (Hypercar Class) and also the IMSA WeatherTech Sports Car Championship (GTP Class).

Lamborghini’s Chairman and CEO stated the step into the highest level of sports car racing mark an important milestone for Lamborghini. He further added that it would give its successful motorsports program more visibility and allow it to test future technologies. According to Lamborghini, its LMDh prototypes will become its most sophisticated four-wheeled open laboratory.  

Also, in keeping with Lamborghini’s racing credentials and heritage in innovation, Squadra Corse is making the step into motorsport driven by a hybrid powertrain. Therefore, LMDh is the perfect fit with Lamborghini’s transitions to hybrid technologies. According to Lamborghini, by the end of 2024, its entire range will have a hybrid powertrain.

Lamborghini, GT Racing & The LMDh

The company has been competing at the top of GT racing since 2015. The manufacturer celebrated 40 titles and also some unique achievements. These unique achievements include the triple GTD class win at the legendary 24 Hours at Daytona between 2018 and 2020. It was the first time a manufacturer won three times in a row. 

Lamborghini’s commitment to the LMDh is a step into the top level of sports car racing. This will allow Lamborghini to compete for overall victories at the world’s most prestigious endurance races. These races are the 24 Hours of Le Mans, 24 Hours at Daytona and 12 Hours of Sebring.

LMDh stands for Le Mans Daytona hybrid, which will give a name to a new sports prototype race car category. The category will debut in 2023, which will give the possibility of competing in both – the IMSA WeatherTech Sports Car Championship and FIA World Endurance Championship. The LMDh program for Lamborghini will run in addition to Squadra Corse’s GT platform. Currently, the GT platform consists of Super Trofeo and GT3, which remain the core of its customer motorsport operations.
