KTM has been testing its AMT gearbox which is likely to make its debut on the brand’s next generation Adventure series motorcycles in the international market. The brand has now revealed all the details of the AMT gearbox that will soon make its market debut. KTM has revealed that the new AMT gearbox that has been under development for quite sometime now, will blend the best of both world’s offering the comfort of an automatic as well as the sportiness by offering manual control.
“This isn’t your grandad’s auto transmission”, says KTM and that is because the gear shifts are electronically controlled via the ECU. In addition to this, the AMT system also comes with a Transmission Control Unit that gets an electromechanical shift actuator making shifts in just 50 milliseconds. This is comparable to a traditional transmission using a Quickshifter+ and also claims to have ultra-precise and super smooth shifts.
The KTM AMT system will allow the rider to choose between a clutchless manual mode (M) or a throttle-and-go automated transmission (A). In Automatic mode, the AMT system shifts the next gear automatically depending on the throttle and load. In Manual Mode, the rider can shift gears using a paddle shifter or the gear lever like a conventional motorcycle. However, unlike traditional gear sequences which is 1-N-2-3-4-5-6, the AMT features P-N-1-2-3-4-5-6, in that sequence, where P stands for Parking. In Automatic Mode, the rider also gets three different shift modes – Comfort, Street and Sport.
Expect the KTM’s AMT gearbox to make its debut on the KTM 1390 Super Adventure S EVO upon its launch on the 22nd October 2024. The technology is also likely to trickle down to other low power KTM touring machines in the near future.
